On Thursday, May 09th 2024, the eighth iteration of our jumping competition "Tag der Überflieger" will once again take place in Essen Überruhr. The main focus is on high jump, long jump and triple jump of the top junior class with German and international athletes.

Tag der Überflieger 2023
In the best athletics weather, the numerous spectators in Essen-Überruhr were able to admire impressive best performances in the high jump, triple jump and long jump. The men's triple jump and high jump were particularly well represented internationally this year. Yasser Triki, fifth at the Olympics from Algeria, improved his season's best in the triple jump to 17.06m. In the men's high jump it went higher than ever before in Essen. Hamish Kerr, third at the 2022 World Indoor Championships from New Zealand, set his outdoor best of 2.31 m, which was also the New Zealand best. Both set new meeting records at the same time.
Sponsors and volunteers make the event possible
The Day of the High Flyers was again generously supported by the main sponsors Sparkasse Essen and Westenergie. Mayor Thomas Kufen, patron of the event again this year, expressly praised the voluntary commitment of the more than 100 helpers who once again organised the meeting on their own initiative.
High jump with strong results
In the high jump, Falk Wendrich (LAZ Soest) came second behind Kerr. With a height of 2.21 m he showed that he is a force to be reckoned with in this outdoor season. Third place went to Marco Fassinotti from Italy with a jump of 2.18m. Florian Hornig (TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen) also jumped 2.18 m, within two centimetres of his own best, and was pleased to improve his season's best by eight centimetres.
Triple jump - decision in the last attempt
In the women's triple jump the clearly favoured jumpers Kira Wittmann (LG Göttingen) and Anna Gräfin Kesyserlingk (LAV Bayer Uerdingen/Dormagen) made it exciting. 13.75 m and 13.53 m were only achieved in the sixth and last attempt. Until then, Marija Siney from Ukraine was clearly in the lead with 13.52m. In the U20 triple jump, our U16 athlete Antonia Rüenauver managed a long jump of 11.15 m in the last attempt, which means a personal best and the ticket to the German U16 Championships.
Men's long jump: Münster ahead of Stuttgart
The men's long jump also ended very close. Luka Herden (LG Brillux Münster) and Oliver Koletzko (VfB Stuttgart) were together in the lead from the third attempt with 7.71m. Cheered on by the great Überruhr crowd, the 23-year-old German university champion from Münster then managed to increase his distance by five centimetres in his last attempt.
Women's long jump decided in last attempt
In the women's long jump Merle Homeier (LG Göttingen) was able to break the 6.50 m mark for the first time this outdoor season and won with 6.55 m. Behind her Nicola Kondziella (TV Wattenscheid) and Caroline Klein (TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen) made it exciting. Here, too, the sixth attempts were the best, with 6.18 m against 6.16 m, the Wattenscheid athlete came out on top by a narrow margin. U20 athlete Laura Raquel Müller (Unterländer LG) flew even further. Her 6.27 m meant a clear victory in the youth competition.
Paralympic long jump with impressive distances
For the first time, two female athletes competed in the Paralympic long jump in Überruhr. Anna Grimaldi from New Zealand won with 5.69 m, ahead of Vanessa Low from Australia with 5.03 m.
Tag der Überflieger 2022
Fabulous weather, more than 500 spectators and many international athletes - the "Tag der Überflieger" was not only a great sports event but also felt like a vivid festival on the Ruhr peninsula. Lots of volunteers from the TLV Germania Überruhr worked day and night to prepare the district sports center Überruhr for the outstanding events in high, long and triple jump. Three high jump areas and a modern measurement setup for the long and triple jump showed the athletes and guests - including the two-times Olympia victor Ulrike Nasse-Meyfarth - that Überruhr has earned its place in the German athletics landscape.
